Different hospital, new unit

By chiseen · Comments (0)
Friday, October 20th, 2017

So I started my final preceptorship the other day (8 more weeks woo-hoo!).
In a different hospital. On a new unit.

It’s so very different from the previous surgical unit that I was on and pretty much all the clinical placements that I’ve had so far.

For my final 8 weeks, I’ll be on a specialized medical unit. I won’t go into details but it’s a specialized oncology unit.
And… I’ve never done oncology before so…

Within the first 30 minutes of my first shift, I could already tell that the learning curve was going to be STEEP.
Because of the nature of the unit and the diagnosis/patient population that they deal with, everything that’s done on the unit is different from any other ward out there.

I’d be lying if I said I’m not worried and anxious and scared about whether or not I’m going to be able to come out of these 8 weeks successful.
But it’s my final 8 weeks. The end of an extremely long and both mentally and physically haul, so I can’t be stopped here. Just gotta push through and keep moving.

Oh, took the IV starting course? Seminar? Thing on campus the other day. It was pretty cool.
Don’t think I’ll have the opportunity to start one in my current placement. But it was nice to have the chance to learn it and practice.

Late night drive

After my night shift yesterday, I picked up some breakfast (aka. drive-thru Timmies) on the way home in the morning. Showered, ate my food and did some translating until I finally got into bed at 10AM. Slept for 3ish hours (but honestly felt like I had barely fallen asleep) and then got up to meet up with friend for movie (Kingsman 2). Been having a lot of troubles with sleeping past few months. Both because of the alternating 12 hour day and night shifts, as well as the stress of preceptorship.

Dinner was sukiyaki with another friend, which was nice. The weather got really cold this week.
Friend was really kind to listen to my 愚痴 and my seemingly never resolving quarterlife crisis of what to do with my life. (Really thankful for all my friends who have been so patient with listening to me hash and re-hash the same problem I’ve been mulling over for two years now… Thank you ;~;) Read More→
