I’ve been to Marulilu plenty of times and I keep going back. I’ve just visited them three times in a month so I reckon I should sit down and write about them properly. Marulilu Cafe is a Japanese-run establishment that serves breakfast all day. So unfortunately they aren’t open for dinner service (closes at 6pm).
The place is tiny and operates kind of like a food court style. You’ll be seated with the menus and then when you are ready, you go up to the counter to order and pay first. When the food is ready, they will bring it to your table. During weekends, the place fills up quickly but they don’t take reservations. The prices are also very reasonable and portions are decent.
They have the traditional western-style breakfast plates as well as eggs benny. I’m not a huge fan of eggs benedict so out of the numerous times I’ve been there, I never tried it. But I always see other customers order it and it looks delicious.
This is their rice burgers, beef sukiyaki and buta(pork) kimchi are the two flavours. It might look small, but there’s a lot of rice so I always find myself struggling to finish the second one near the end. It also comes with a small side of salad and miso soup. If you don’t think you can finish both rice burgers or you want to leave room to try another dish, you also have the option of choosing just one rice burger.
Omurice is definitely a comfort food of mine. A lot of the omurice that I’ve had tend to have ketchup fried rice underneath the egg omelette, but the Garlice omurice at Marulilu is just white rice. However with the sauce together it isn’t bland at all.
The Japanese style breakfast. You have the choice between tofu or natto (fermented beans); I can’t eat natto so I always go with the tofu. It just seems like a very healthy, full breakfast to me and I enjoy it very much. The omelette is soft and fluffy and the salmon isn’t dry at all and lightly seasoned.
The matcha latte seems to be a popular drink order there. I’ve had the both hot and cold. When you order it cold, the syrup comes separately so you can add however much you want. I’ve also tried their white chocolate matcha latte which was heavenly too. But only something I can indulge in once in a while as the white chocolate is quite rich.
This is the hot milky caramel latte I think? It was nice and rich, I loved the whipping cream on top but I found it a little bit too sweet for my liking.
